What are the stories we tell and what are the stories we don't tell and why don't we tell certain stories? These questions drive my journalism, my poetry and my fiction. I'd love to hear from readers of THE COST OF FREE LAND who are grappling with their own proximity to America's dispossession of Native lands. I've been writing about the American West, its land and its denizens for twenty-five years and during that time I've written about all manner of aspects of this region. Lately, I've been thinking about the intersection of land and labor. I'm also always delighted to engage with readers about how to write, research and interrogate family stories.
I write in an effort to create a conversation through the page. Speaking to readers directly collapses that distance, and brings the world of ideas off the page and into the space between us.
I'm the Mom of two young kids. If anyone is struggling with how to write and balance family, I'm not saying I'm an expert but, fwiw, I have a few hacks I'd be glad to share.
Growing up, Rebecca Clarren only knew the major plot points of her tenacious immigrant family’s origins. Her great-great-grandparents, the Sinykins, and their six children fled antisemitism in Russia and arrived in the United States at the turn of the 20th century, ultimately settling on a 160-acre homestead in South Dakota. Over the next few decades, despite tough years on a merciless prairie and multiple setbacks, the Sinykins became an American immigrant success story.

In The Cost of Free Land, Clarren melds investigative reporting with personal family history to reveal the intertwined stories of her family and the Lakota, and the devastating cycle of loss of Indigenous land, culture, and resources that continues today.
With deep empathy and clarity of purpose, Clarren grapples with the personal and national consequences of this legacy of violence and dispossession. When Jackie Dunbar's father dies, she takes a leave from medical school and goes back to the family cattle ranch in Colorado to set affairs in order.
